Creative Solutions for Positive Change: How Arts Programs Shape the Future of Youth

In this episode we sit down with David N. Mitchell, President and CEO of The Unity Production Group, LLC. and Dir. of Drama Ministry for the AME Church. Mitchell is Chicago native and a graduate of Grambling State University. He holds a B.A. in Theatre and Business and is an award winning playwright, actor and director.

Mitchell combined his love for theatre and ministry to found "The Tipping Point Project in Asheville, NC to meet the needs of their youth population. The program uses theatre to address the modern day challenges of drugs, crime, violence, and negative behaviors.

Mitchell and his program have received national recognition by the National League of Cities for its creative effectiveness in decreasing crime in communities and increasing academic performance for youth participants.

David Mitchell is from Chicago, Illinois and has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre and Business. He previously served as the Outreach Coordinator for the North Carolina Arts Council in the Department of Cultural Resources and was responsible for changing the cultural landscape of the state through several federally funded programs such as the Organization of Color Development Program and the Rural Arts Initiative, both funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. He has served as diversity consultants for arts organizations in North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Washington, D.C., Ohio, Texas, California and Oregon.

David established the Theatre Program at St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, NC and was also an Adjunct Professor of Theatre at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. David has directed youth theatre programs and theatre residencies throughout the United States. He served as Superintendent of Cultural Arts for the City of Asheville, North Carolina where he developed the Cultural Renaissance Arts Program that was bestowed the 2006 Gold Medal for Municipal Excellence as the leading municipal program in the nation. He also produced the largest festival in the southeast, Bele Chere in Asheville, NC and developed the Asheville Film Festival.
He has also produced and directed the National Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem, NC, the Spoleto and MOJA Festival in Charleston, SC, and the GOOMBAY Festival of Asheville, NC.
